Language Proficiency Testing

According to Alberta Educations Ministry for Advanced Educations Frequently Asked Questions About International Students answer to: ” How will my institution determine if international students have an adequate level of English language proficiency?”

Each institution has the ability to determine its own academic admission requirements, including setting minimum levels of English language proficiency for entrance requirements. There are no system or program-wide requirements for English language proficiency for post-secondary institutions.

The Ministry expects that institutions will set language requirements at levels that meet accepted industry standards and practices and ensure international students can be successful in their program of study.

To assist institutions in reviewing their English language requirements, the Ministry provides the following information on the range of English language requirements used within the public post-secondary system across a number of language tests.
